Otaku News Weekly Recap: March 15, 2021 - March 21, 2021
I am going to start with my favorite news of the week right from the top. Junji Ito is getting another anime! The wraparound jacket band on Junji Ito's Genkai Chitai (Disturbing Zone) manga volume reveals the Itō Junji Kesssaku-shū (Junji Ito Masterworks Collection) has a new anime project. The first Junji Ito Collection anime came out in 2018; I loved and even made a video about it. I cannot wait to see which stories get included in this one, but I guess will have to wait regardless. At least the Lovesickness manga collection comes out in April.
Moving directly into even more horror manga to anime news, Kadokawa announced Tomoki Izumi's Mieruko-chan horror comedy manga will have an anime premiere this year. The anime's website has a teaser trailer for the anime, and Izumi drew an illustration in celebration of the announcement. Somehow, I never heard of this until now, but horror and comedy is definitely something I want to see.
There is more news that is scary in a maybe horror sense. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards, which will be held on April 25. There were no anime film nominations in the Animated Feature Film category. There were plenty eligible, though, and include:
Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, Earwig and the Witch, Lupin III THE FIRST, ON-GAKU: Our Sound, Ride Your Wave, and Whisker Away.
Considering the typical trend for these awards this is not that surprising.
Something else that is no surprise is that the exact opposite happened at the 44th Japan Academy Awards. The award for the Japan Academy Film Prize for Animation of the Year went to Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train. See, this is no surprise at all considering it became the biggest Japanese film of all-time both domestically. Also, this makes Demon Slayer: Mugen Train the first franchise anime film to win the award. Okay, that is actually a bit of a surprise.
There is an update to the whole Seven Seas translation debacle. If you are not aware of this news, like I was since I missed some weeks of doing this recap, Seven Seas had left out some portions of their English translations. There are a few reasons people speculate as to why they did this such as ease of reading or “unnecessary” content that English readers would not understand the Japanese relevance, but it is just pretty just for censorship sake. That is mainly just my opinion, but come on; it is obvious.
Anyways this update came after Inori, author of I'm in Love with the Villainess, responded to fans on Twitter about the recent discovery that parts from the first novel were omitted from the English release. Inori said, “I’m sure there was an unavoidable reason behind what happened, but it’s still a little sad.” So, the statement from Seven Seas thanks them for bringing it to their attention and put the blame on the editorial process. However, this process will change, and all eBooks will be fixed as well as all future printings of paperbacks. It is good they were called out, and hopefully they really will change as they said.
The last bit of news for this week’s recap is also an update, but in a more positive direction. Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop live-action adaptation finished filming the first season. This update came from Daniella Pineda’s, who plays Faye Valentine, Instagram post. Although it is still not here yet, I am glad to know it still in the works since I almost forgot it was a thing. Let us just hope it is not butchered like the tragedies that came before it.
