Otaku News Weekly Recap: January 4, 2021 - January 10, 2021


To celebrate the New Year, Kodansha is discounting more than 3000 select digital manga titles up to 50% off at participating digital retailers. The New Year, New Manga sale runs until January 18th!


Kodansha announced Hajime Isayama will end the Attack on Titan manga in the May issue of the Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine on April 9. The manga's 34th and final volume will ship on June 9. Kodansha also teased that many projects are being prepared for the manga's conclusion.

For the final season of Attack on Titan, Kodansha USA and Humble Bundle teamed up to launch the Attack on Titan Final Season Humble Manga Bundle! You can get over $750 worth of the original Attack on Titan digital manga, its spinoff series, light novels, guides, and even audiobooks, for only $20 or more if feeling generous! This year's fifth and sixth combined issue of the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine published the final chapter of Atsushi Nakamura's Agravity Boys manga. The manga will have a concluding arc in the Jump Giga magazine.


Shogakukan listed the second volume of Haro Aso's Imawa no Kuni no Alice Retry (Alice in Borderland Retry) manga will be the final volume and ship on February 18.


7/11 has an animated 30-second TV commercial from Answerstudio, which cooperated on your name, and Karuho Shina, the author of the Kimi ni Todoke: From You to Me manga. The TV CM is entitled "Tokimeki wa, Sugu Soba ni" ("What Makes Your Heart Thrill is Right Nearby") and proposes that one does not have to embark on a big adventure to find satisfaction, because the little things in life are waiting just around the corner.


In addition to the launch of the global character popularity poll for the One Piece 1000th chapter celebration is a live-action promo. The video takes us from 1997 to today, highlighting the impact the series had on fans over the years.

Shueisha also teamed up with Irasutoya in a collaboration that features adorable illustrations of the Straw Hat Pirates, their allies, and their enemies. The full set of 20 illustrations can be found on Irasutoya’s website. Shueisha granted permission for fans to use these images as free clip art, while Irasutoya kindly reminds fans not to use them in ways that would be damaging to the reputation and image of the One Piece series.


Takeshi Obata and Tsugumi Ohba's Platinum End manga ended in the February issue of the Jump SQ magazine. The manga's 14th and final volume will ship on February 4. The manga is also getting a television anime adaptation that will premiere in fall 2021.


The Feburary issue of the Jump SQ magazine announced Ryōma Kitada's Dokyū Hentai HxEros (SUPER HXEROS) manga will end in the next issue in February. Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the English manga, and it will release the first volume physically and digitally in February 2021. Kitada asked fans to look forward to HXEROS continuing in some form in the future in the author's notes at the end of the magazine issue.


The winter uniform depicted in Gochūmon wa Usagi Desu ka? BLOOM (Is the order a rabbit? BLOOM) topped COSPA's yearly list of top-selling outfits.


The official website for the live-action film adaptation of Ken Wakui's Tokyo Revengers manga posted two teaser visuals and a 30-second teaser trailer introducing its main cast members. The clip also confirms that the film is now set for July 2021.


Kodansha announced Shinobu Ohtaka's manga series Orient will get an anime adaptation, but details, such as broadcast dates, are unknown at this time. The magazine's official YouTube channel is streaming a 30-second announcement PV with the main character voices. The first chapter of the manga is available for free on Kodansha’s website.


The official YouTube channel for singer TRUE posted an eight-minute behind-the-scenes clip of the music video for her upcoming 16th single song "Storyteller" to show how she was filmed at a studio. The CD single is set to be released in Japan on January 13 and will also be featured as the OP theme for the second season of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, which premieres in Japan one day before the release.


The MARS RED anime's official Twitter account @marsredtv reported the anime's opening theme, "Aria of Life" will be performed by WagakkiBand. The anime will premiere this April and will be simulcast by Funimation, who is also co-producing it.


The live-action film adaptation of Aka Akasaka's romantic comedy manga Kaguya-sama: Love Is War broadcast on terrestrial broadcasting for the first time on January 5. In addition, the film's official Twitter account @kaguyasama0906 teased there would be a big announcement during the broadcast.

Afterwards, TOHO began streaming a comment video for the upcoming live-action sequel film of Kaguya-sama: Love is War. The video shows cast members Shō Hirano (who plays Miyuki Shirogane) and Kanna Hashimoto (who plays Kaguya Shinomiya) announcing the film's opening date is August 20, as well as its tentative title of Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai 2: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunōsen.


On the release day of Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia)’s 29th volume in Japan, the manga’s official Twitter account @myheroacademia confirmed it reached a milestone of 30 million copies printed (which includes digital edition).


This year's combined third and fourth issues of Shogakukan's Sho-Comi magazine revealed on Monday that Miko Mitsuki's Teito Hatsukoi Shinjū will get a side story chapter in the "February 14" issue of the Sho-ComiX magazine on January 15.


Writer Fumiaki Maruto and artist Sabu Musha launched a new manga titled Mixed Media Maiden, which centers on an unlucky man who has a "divine intervention" from a "goddess of entertainment," on Shogakukan's Manga ONE app.

The app also revealed Tatsuhiko Takimoto, author the Welcome to the NHK novel, will create a new manga with artist Aruta Kusui titled Isekai Nanpa ("Fantasy World Pickup Artist").


The official website for the 7SEEDS anime announced the second season completely replaced its ending animation sequence after the production team received a notice that the animation was similar to the ending sequence of Kyoto Animation's 2013 anime Beyond the Boundary. The announcement did note the production team arrived at the conclusion that it was "impossible to deny" the ending sequence's similarities.


The fourth collected volume of Hajime Komoto’s Mashle: Magic and Muscles manga has just been released in Japan, and to celebrate this milestone a new preview video featuring voice actor Natsuki Hanae (voice of Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) was published to Youtube.


Satoru Hiura revealed on Twitter @marikosatoru that her Hotaru no Hikari BABY manga will end in the sixth volume in early summer. Hiura also revealed she is planning a new manga serialization starting in summer or fall.


This year's third issue of Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine confirmed Yu Tomofuji's Niehime to Kemono no Ō (Sacrificial Princess & the King of Beasts) manga will get a prequel "episode.0" chapter and have opening color pages in the magazine's next issue on January 20.


The Hana to Yume magazine also announced Ryoko Fukuyama will launch a new manga titled Setsunateki Distance (Ephemeral Distance) the magazine on January 27. The first chapter will have 32 pages with a color page and feature on the magazine's cover.


A new exhibition will commemorate the 25th anniversary of Nobuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin manga this year. The exhibition's Twitter account @ruroken_ten previewed the rough layout draft for a new manga titled "Sakabatō Shogeki" (Reverse-Blade Katana: First Bout) that Watsuki is drawing exclusively for the exhibition. This manga recounts the first time Kenshin Himura encounters and wields the reverse-blade katana and serves as an epilogue to the manga chapter "Act 081 Shakkū's Wish." The exhibit will run at Tokyo Dome City's Gallery AaMo from January 22 to March 7, and then move to the Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art's Higashiyama Cube venue from April 23 to June 6.


The official Twitter account for Kadokawa's Young Ace magazine @YA_henshubu revealed Kamentotsu will draw a manga based on artist and figure maker Kahori Hinata's Morris character. The manga is tentatively titled Morris ~Tsuno ga Haeta Neko~ (Morris ~The Cat With the Fancy Horns~) and will launch in Young Ace's March issue on February 4.


To celebrate the first anniversary virtual YouTuber agency Hololive's fourth-generation idol member Himemori Luna, her character designer, Hiro Kanzaki, provided a special illustration of her holding a bounquet of flowers. A set of commemorative items including her ASMR voices is also now available. The commemorative voices are available for overseas purchasers on GeekJack.


The official Twitter account for the Katana Maidens franchise @toji_roudoku announced an all-new recitation play titled Toji no Miko: Seika Houtou is now in the works and will tell a sequel story set seven months after the TV anime. It is planned as a new work of READPIA, KADOKAWA's recitation play brand, and the performance schedule and other details will be announced later.


Osamu Tezuka's Black Jack series is selling limited-edition art prints to commemorate the creator's 75th anniversary as a manga artist. PREMICO's online shop began selling the reproductions on January 4, which is the same date as Osamu Tezuka's debut as a manga artist. The drawing is of a cover of a 1977 issue of Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine. Tezuka's brushstroke, signature, and colors will also be reproduced in high detail with a technique known as Piezography. Only 350 prints will be sold, and 3% of sales will be donated to the non-governmental organization Doctors Without Borders.


Uchicomi, a Japanese smart phone app designed to put landlords and potential tenants in direct contact, published a pair of TV commercials featuring the voice talents of Tomokazu Sugita (voice of Gintoki Sakata in Gintama) and Akari Kito (voice of Nezuko Kamado in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba). The two advertisements are 15 and 30 seconds and feature Sugita as the narrator and Kito as a young, professional woman who is living on her own and having trouble with the rental process. In addition to the TV CMs, Uchicomi is running a promotion until March 31, for people who sign up for their service in which one person (chosen by lottery-style drawing) will win a colored illustration autographed by Sugita and Kito.


Sekai Project announced it is canceling its publication of Satoru Sao, Takumi Yanai, and Daisuke Izuka's GATE manga, following its delayed release of the manga's second volume. The company apologized, saying that some factors were out if its control, but the company "dropped the ball" on the project. Sekai Project has offered to cooperate with any company that relicenses the manga.


The official website for the new anime of Hiroyuki Takei's Shaman King manga revealed two additional cast members. The newly announced cast members are: Yūji Ueda as Horohoro and Megumi Nakajima as Kororo.


Animation studio Yostar Pictures announced it has appointed director Keiichi Satō (known for Tiger & Bunny) as creative director and representative of the studio's IP department. The studio already green-lit an original project with Satō credited for writing and original concept. The company also revealed that it will have the Albacrow studio led by animator Ryousuke Inagaki under Satō's leadership as part of a "cooperative system."


To celebrate the airing of the first episode Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime on January 7, 2011, staff behind the original series launched a brand new 10th Anniversary Project website with comments from the creators behind the franchise and announced that starting January 14, illustrators and manga creators will release special commemorative images. The post on Twitter @madoka_magica teases more to come for the 10th-anniversary project.


Manga creator Kouji Seo revealed on Twitter @seokouji he is currently working on his new manga serialization that is scheduled to debut this spring. He revealed a storyboard of the preview page and revealed he had not yet decided on a title. He jokingly did add that he suggested the title of "Gotōbun no Waitress de Yokunai desu ka?" (Are Quintuplet Waitresses Not Fine?) but was ignored.


The KADOKAWA Official Online Shop has the SOS Brigade scents in five variants. A series of tweets from the official Haruhi Suzumiya Twitter account @haruhi_official previews all five. All five perfumes are currently available for pre-order with orders due to ship out in February.

Promare also has a new line of perfumes coming! According to the official site, there are four new fragrances each inspired by a character from the film: Aina, Remi, Gueira, and Meis. These join the three previously released fragrances modeled after Galo, Lio and Kray, and the new aromas will be available starting in March.


Universal Studios Japan opened a virtual website for its Super Nintendo World area. The website offers a virtual tour of the area, with animated videos of rides in motion and the ability to interactively move around the park by scrolling down on the website. The tour previews various attractions including Mario Kart: Koopa's (Bowser's) Challenge, Yoshi's Adventure, and the playground. The website also highlights and lists menus for Kinopio's (Toad's) Cafe, Pit Stop Popcorn, and Yoshi's Snack Island, as well as a page for the 1-Up Factory gift shop and the merchandise for sale. Super Nintendo World will open on February 4.


The official Twitter account for The Promised Neverland series @yakuneba_staff announced the series is getting a game app, and more details will be revealed at a later date.

Toei began streaming a new trailer for the second film in the two-part Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon Eternal (Pretty Guardians Sailor Moon Eternal The MOVIE) anime film project. The video previews the film project's theme song "Tsukiiro Chainon" (Moonlight Chainon) by Momoiro Clover Z and the main cast. Toei also unveiled a new poster visual of the 10 Sailor Guardians assembled in their ultimate Eternal forms for the film.


Manga creator and artist Takehiko Inoue announced on his Twitter account @inouetake that his Slam Dunk basketball manga is inspiring a film. While Inoue's original announcement did not reveal whether the film will be anime or live-action, the film's official website lists anime studio Toei Animation, and describes it as an anime film.


TV Tokyo announced it is producing a live-action series adaptation of Misato Konari's Coffee Ikaga Deshō (Would You Like Some Coffee?) manga and will premiere this year. Konari drew an illustration to celebrate the announcement, along with a comment saying, "I'm crazy excited for the series! I'll be watching it every week with a cup of coffee in hand."


Kadokawa announced Kaori Tsurutani's Metamorphose no Engawa (BL Metamorphosis) manga is inspiring a live-action film, but the announcement did not reveal an opening date or other details for the film.


Dempagumi.inc. idol Mirin Furukawa revealed on Instagram that she is pregnant with their first child. She stated that she has been carrying the child for four months and, because of health considerations, she has had to take more breaks from live performances towards the end of the year. She plans to perform at graduating Dempagumi.inc member Eimi Naruse's farewell concert in February, albeit with a reduced setlist while taking careful consideration of her body's condition.


The official Twitter account @shadowshouse_yj for the anime of two-person creator team so-ma-to's Shadows House manga announced the anime will premiere in April.


Oricon reported the eighth, first, and seventh volumes of Koyoharu Gotouge's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga have each sold cumulative totals of over 5 million copies and are the first manga volumes to sell over 5 million copies in print since Oricon began posting its weekly book ranking charts in April 2008.


The official website for Kodansha's planned "The Complete Works Project" for Katsuhiro Otomo's manga revealed on Wednesday that the project will debut this year. The project will release Otomo's entire body of published work since his professional debut in 1971.

GKIDS announced it is working with Fathom Events and independent theater circuits to begin screening Studio Ghibli's first CG feature Earwig and the Witch, Goro Miyazaki's anime adaptation of Diana Wynne Jones' novel of the same name, in select theaters in the United States on February 3. HBO Max will start streaming the film February 5 in the U.S. The theatrical run will also qualify it for the Oscars.

GKIDS also announced the January 12 premiere of Night Is Short, Walk On Girl on HBO Max will not only feature the original Japanese audio with English subtitles, but will also feature a brand-new English dub. The English-dubbed trailer and cast list can be found GKIDS Films twitter @GKIDSfilms.


A small airport in Sapporo City called "Okadama Airport" could be renamed to "Hatsune Miku Airport" in the future, according to a report by Traffic News. The name is one of several proposed for the airport; if it were picked it would be a nod to Crypton Future Media, a Sapporo-based company which developed Hatsune Miku. Other proposed names include "Sapporo Airport" and "Sapporo Clock Tower Airport" (a reference to the tourist attraction). A representative of the city said that the names were proposed in consultation with the city and the Hokkaido Prefecture.


Sentai Filmworks announced the English dub cast for the Majestic Prince: Genetic Awakening anime film and the Majestic Prince: Wings to the Future OVA. They are also streaming an English dub clip.


Mangaka Sōichirō Yamamoto revealed on his Twitter account @udon0531 that his Sore Demo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru (Even So, Ayumu Approaches) manga is receiving an anime adaptation. The official YouTube channel for Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine is streaming a promotional video for the manga and reveals the anime will premiere in 2022.


Kenji Inoue and Kimitake Yoshioka's Grand Blue Dreaming manga began a hiatus in the February issue of Kodansha's Good! Afternoon magazine. The announcement from Grand Blue Dreaming’s Twitter @sakazukiwohosu noted Inoue has been suffering from back pain due to overwork, and the manga will remain in hiatus until he recovers.


Voice actors Ai Kayano and Nobunaga Shimazaki share their voices in a preview video for Musume Janakute Mama ga Sukinano!? ("It's Not My Daughter, But Me That You Love!?"), a light novel series written by Kota Nozomi and illustrated by Giuniu about a college student who falls in love with the mother of his childhood best friend.


The February issue of Akita Shoten's Mystery Bonita magazine revealed Sai Asai's Nishi Ogikubo Mitsuboshi Yōshudō manga is getting a live-action television series adaptation.



The voice actress unit Seiyu Sanshimai Team Y announced on YouTube they have been participating in Bushiroad Media's new manga project Teppen!!! as original story collaborators. The manga's illustrator Namamugi also reported the news on Twitter @mugi2112.


A new website and Twitter account @FairyRanmaru opened to announce a new original television anime titled Fairy Ranmaru ~Anata no Kokoro O-tasukeshimasu~ (Fairy Ranmaru ~I Will Help Your Heart~) that will launch in April. The website and account also shared the anime's teaser art. A production unveiling event will stream January 18 on YouTube to present the cast, director, and story.


Anison supergroup JAM Project dropped major news on their 20th anniversary film including a new trailer, guest performers, and its official title. It is officially called GET OVER - JAM Project THE MOVIE – and will come out February 26.


The new season of Laid-Back Camp is airing and A Place Further Than the Universe anime is getting a rebroadcast in Japan, so the official Twitter accounts of both series @yurucamp_anime and @yorimoi posted visuals of the main characters in each show swapping places in their respective key visuals.

"Maple and Sally's Defense Specialization and Live Special," the special to mark the anniversary of the BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense anime's premiere, announced the second season of the anime will premiere in 2022.


Bushiroad announced it filed a lawsuit in the Tokyo District Court against the contracted creator of the Future Card Buddyfight card game Yoshimasa Ikeda and his company Studio Ikecchi, for disseminating confidential information about Buddyfight as well as for copyright infringement and credibility damage to the company.


The "Argonavis AAside New Year Live-Streamed 'NaviZome' Online" event announced the Argonavis from BanG Dream! anime film project is green-lit, and the staff will announce more details in the future. The event also announced a stage play adaptation of Argonavis from BanG Dream! The production will run from June 18 to June 20 at Osaka's Sankei Hall Breeze and then from June 23 to June 27 at Tokyo's Theater 1010.


Manga Planet announced three manga titles from SOZO Comics, The Warrior Demigods, Champions of Sparta, The Most Tsundere Boss in History, and Egwin & Friends will be added to the Manga Planet Library in January. The first chapters of these titles will be available to read for free in the Manga Planet Library, and subscribers to the Library will get to read the succeeding chapters as well as other manga titles from SOZO Comics.


Fantasista, Inc.'s futekiya, a boys-love manga subscription service, announced it will add three new volumes of its Shodensha Publishing titles including: At 25:00, in Akasaka volume 2, Sneaky Red volume 3, and Groping in the Dark volume 3. Futekiya will announce release dates for these volumes at a later time.


Frontier Works posted a teaser promotional video announcing the "Even a Worm" arc of Kazuya Minekura's Saiyuki Reload manga is getting an anime named Saiyuki Reload -ZEROIN-.


Due to the Japanese government declaring a new state of emergency in Tokyo and the neighboring prefectures of Saitama, Kanagawa, and Chiba from January 8 to February 7, companies have canceled, delayed, or altered events. These include events such as:

The planned appearance of Sailor Moon cast members Kotono Mitsuishi and Misato Fukuen at a screening of the first film in the two-part Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon Eternal anime film project have been canceled. The cast members' talk show segment is now slated to stream online.

The organizers of GG Eiga Sai (Golden Generation Film Festival), a screening series dedicated to director Mamoru Oshii which would have traveled between five cities from January 9 to February 7, is delayed until further notice.

The model kit and figure convention Wonder Festival 2021 is canceled.

Square Enix delayed its planned Final Fantasy XIV Artwork Exhibition event which was originally scheduled to run from January 8 until January 12. A new schedule will be announced at a later date.

The Quintessential Quintuplets ∬ attraction at the Fuji-Q Highland theme park originally scheduled from February 13 to April 4 is delayed to an unannounced date.

The six "Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- 6th Live <<2nd D.R.B>>" concerts in Osaka, Aichi, and Tokyo will still go on from January 30 to February 21 but will now stream live online with no in-person audiences.

The Gundam Factory Yokohama venue is halting advance sales for admission tickets to the life-size moving Gundam statue in Yokohama from January 9 to 11 but will announce later how people can buy tickets on the same day they visit.

The Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202 anime announced "Uchū Senkan Yamato" to Iu Jidai: Seireki 2202-nen no Sentaku (The "Space Battleship Yamato" Era: The Choice in 2202), the compilation film for the Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202 anime, was originally scheduled for January 15 but is delayed.

The midnight screenings of the new Evangelion film, Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban :||, (Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time), are canceled.

And, unfortunately, yet necessarily, more.


The official website for the Evangelion franchise announced the planned screenings for Evangelion: 3.333 You Can (Not) Redo, the updated IMAX version of the Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo film, was temporarily on hold due to an audio issue with the content sent to theaters, which ended up only as a one day delay behind schedule. Khara explained that in the process of mixing the video and audio tracks for IMAX presentation, they discovered part of the audio track was not present in the final product.

Shungo Sumaki, illustrator for the light novel Konjiki no Wordmaster, announced on his Twitter account @SmakiS that he tested positive for COVID-19.


The official website for the BanG Dream! project announced voice actress Kanon Shizaki also tested positive for COVID-19. Although she has a normal body temperature and no symptoms so far, she is undergoing medical treatment after the PCR test result.


English-language voice-acting community members, including Christie Cate and Natalie Hoover, confirmed voice actor Brad Venable passed away at 43. The date and cause of death were not specified. Venable's anime roles include: Joe Joe in Toriko, Scratchmen Apoo in One Piece, Gaki in Hunter × Hunter, Byro and Byro Cracy in FairyTail, and more.
